ANA to serve Ichinokura sake in economy

Great news! Japan’s ANA will start serving sake in economy class. The¬†Star Alliance airline said it was responding to requests from its passengers to make the Japanese rice wine available down the back as well.

ANA has existing sake services in the first, business class and premium economy cabins. The new service for economy will be available on all international flights starting 1 September.

The airline notes – quite rightly – that this is a good way of highlighting Japanese culture. By exposing its global passengers to the country’s staple alcoholic beverage, ANA is promoting Japanese culture and traditions.

The timing is particularly relevant as tourism to the Asian country is increasing ahead of Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in 2020.

The sake ANA will serve in economy is from Ichinokura Brewery in Miyagi Prefecture, just slightly north of Sendai. The specific brand is Ichinokura Tokubetsu Junmai Sake Dry and is made from two rice varieties, Sasanishiki and Kura no Hana.

ANA’s main competitor, Japan Airlines, has long served sake in economy.
